Ultrasound Scattering Off a Cylinder
This 2D model studies the scattering of ultrasound waves off a cylindrical obstacle with different acoustic properties than those of the surrounding medium. The ultraweak variational formulation (UVWF) makes it possible to resolve the short wavelengths on a standard mesh.
The main advantage of the UWVF for modeling high-frequency acoustic phenomena is its economy with regards to computational complexity, compared with lower-order finite element analysis. This advantage stems from the property of the UWVF’s elements containing information about the solution to the Helmholtz scalar wave equation in free space.
